A mere handful of humans survive, most are the parachute babies.  The beasts of old have sated themselves to their fill on the lives of everything on Earth, and now the beasts are losing their bite and falling back into slumber.  Deep underground, Kyle is watching his loved ones dying when a message comes to him from Dził Nchaa Si An, “the seat of the Gods”, the Apache holy mountain, Mt. Graham.  One of the spacecrafts that brought the parachute babies is returning.  A sacrifice is demanded.  With an aching heart, Kyle takes his infant son, a boy just the age that Kyle was when he was dropped to Earth, to his rendezvous on Mt. Graham.  Facing the same awful choice once presented to biblical Abraham, Kyle worries that his sacrifice will not be accepted- and this time, there will be no “ram in the thicket” to substitute.
